An extraterrestrial being falls in love with the wife of the recently
deceased man whose shape he has taken. A sop to studio-friendly fare
after The Thing and Christine flopped, John Carpenter's sci-fi
romance has a certain amount of charm thanks to winning performances
from leads Jeff Bridges (Oscar-nominated for this) and Karen Allen.
Charles Martin Smith also gives good support and comic relief. It's all
a bit starry-eyed and sentimental, but not a bad attempt at
diversification for a director usually associated with the gory and
ghostly.
