Buster Keaton
Born: 1895
Read the full profile
At their incomparable best, Keaton's films display lightning fast ingenuity and lots of gags showing off his amazing physical prowess. But unlike many comedy films of the silent era, they remain interesting: partly because of Buster's almost otherworldly stoicism, rather than the easy pathos of Chaplin; but also due to their occasionally surreal nature (admired by Bunuel and Lorca) and diversions into the nature of film and existence itself. He made his best-regarded work - Cops, The General, Sherlock Jr - for Joseph Schenck in the 1920s; his idiosyncratic talents were buried by a move to major studio MGM and the advent of sound.
