This unclassifiable debut from Jim Jarmusch's former cameraman
introduced a number of notable talents to the world, not least his own:
the film is set in a completely realised, if entirely imaginary, world
of hip style and strangeness. In his breakthrough role, Brad Pitt plays
Johnny, a man with a haircut as unusual as his shoes, who must choose
between adolescent ideals and grown-up reality. Catherine Keener
lends sterling support as the less fucked-up woman in his life; but it's
that hoary old rocker Nick Cave who steals the show, playing - what else?
- a hoary old rocker. Sharp, stylish and funny as hell.
