The Thing
Originally released: 1982
Cruelly robbed, like Blade Runner, of both box-office and critical appreciation in 1982 (the year of ET), this has since built up a deserved reputation as one of director John Carpenter's best pieces of sci-fi/horror - perhaps the best. Extremely well paced, plotted and scored (by Ennio Morricone), it sticks closer to the source novella than the earlier Nyby/Hawks version, retaining the central conceit of the monster killing then imitating its victims. A terrific ensemble cast includes Kurt Russell (never better), Keith David, Donald Moffat and the excellent Wilford Brimley, in the eerie and visually powerful Arctic setting. There's one easily recognisable all-time classic line, as well.
