Humdrum adaptation of a Sam Shepard play, graced with a wonderful cast
but lacking in energy and purpose. The plot, which manages to be both too
thin and murky, involves a racing scam the three leads perpetrated in
their youth, and for which washed-up Nolte is blackmailing wealthy,
successful Bridges (now married to Stone, who we don't see until a good
hour into the film). It is, one supposes, about disappointment and
misdirected lives, but its themes only occasionally flicker into life
on the screen, helped by luminous Conrad Hall cinematography. Like the
very similar Twilight, it's mercurial, sombre, and, sadly, dull.
