Take the magic out of Spielberg and you're left with a large overblown
vanity piece that also manages to insult the source material it's
revising, in this case Peter Pan. Dustin Hoffman is an effective
pantomime Captain Hook to Robin Williams' uncharacteristically
subdued Peter. But the introduction of skateboarding and early 1990s
trappings to the Lost Boys is indicative of the whole: an uninspired
attempt to revive long-gone childish glee. Julia Roberts'
uncomfortable Tinkerbell projects the audience's reaction: stunted
expectation.
