After a decade-long dry spell, 1993 was perhaps Spielberg's best year,
what with this return to commercial form and the exemplary Schindler's
List. Jurassic Park is a roller-coaster pure and simple, but what a
ride! The story of a theme park populated by genetically engineered
dinosaurs was both timely and fun, and Spielberg picked up the ball
running, making his finest thriller since Jaws. Admittedly the
plotting is simplistic and the performances are stale (except for a
rambunctious Goldblum), but the special effects are truly
breathtaking and the action is stunning and relentless. A
stand-up-and-clap-it's-so-good blockbuster.
