Escape from New York
Originally released: 1981
Kurt Russell is Snake Plissken, convict of the future assigned to rescue president Donald Pleasence from the vast prison that Manhattan has become, in John Carpenter's grungily Orwellian action film. Hits and misses, both cool and too cool for its own good, with its laid back storytelling and cast of unattractive weirdos. Russell is a plus point, in his first big screen collaboration with Carpenter (they made a biopic of Elvis on TV). His persona (minus eye patch) doesn't change much in the later movies.
