Another adaptation by Cronenberg of an unfilmable book. He succeeds in
distilling the themes of JG Ballard's book without indulging the
undeniably pornographic imagery, and manages to expand the
vocabulary of cinema by using sexual predisposition as a narrative
device where words would otherwise have been used. But all that doesn't
change the fact that it's pretty hard going: ponderous, sterile and
notably not worth all the fuss it caused on its initial release.
