A Spielberg protege, Zemeckis has carved a niche for himself as a
craftsman of special effects extravaganzas. He began making quirky
comedies before the crossover Indiana Jones-inspired hit Romancing
The Stone. So far he has had two career spikes: in 1985 with Back To The
Future and in 1994 with Forrest Gump, which won him an Oscar. The
quintessential Zemeckis movie is Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with its
conflation of SFX techniques and bubbly comedy. Since Gump, he has
become increasingly po-faced, with his latest, Castaway, his most
serious to date.
