Brilliant, spine-tingling, bravura film-making. Jaws is a wondrous
tale of man against beast - in this case the relentless pursuit of a Great
White Shark. The action begins as seaside resort Amity is menaced by the
eponymous jaws, building to a final act showdown between town cop
Scheider, geeky oceanographer Dreyfuss, surly fisherman Shaw and the
glorious “Bruce”, the rarely seen but omnipresent threat. Machismo is
thrown around and blood flows. The banter between the men is furious,
repressed and very funny. The John Williams score went down in history,
foreshadowing the movement of the beast with perfect foreboding.
Spielberg had arrived. Truly great.
