Unfairly criticised on initial release, Roger Spottiswood’s
media-focused Bond flick gives Brosnan more to do, and the best Bond
Girl ever, in high-kicking Hong Kong superstar Michelle Yeoh. There
are some truly inventive set pieces (highlight: Yeoh and Brosnan
handcuffed together in a motorbike-chased-by-helicopter
sequence). Throw in Teri Hatcher, Jonathan Pryce as the mogul villain,
Judi Dench pithy as ever as M and a remote control BMW - and you’ve got a
refreshingly invigorating film. Plus, David Arnold’s musical homage
to John Barry injects a welcome feeling of nostalgia that adds colour
and energy to the fun.
