Two lonely people (Leung and Cheung) are drawn together when they
discover that their partners are having an affair with each other. As
their own attraction grows despite their better judgement, every
frame throbs with powerful, buried feelings. The screen is drenched in
rich, red tones, sound-tracked by the cries of cellos in the night. With
his note-perfect command of sound, sets, costumes, and in the
performances he draws from his actors, Hong Kong's Wong Kar-Wai proves
himself a master, the Kubrick of South-East Asia, surrounded by some of
the best collaborators in the world. Film-making doesn't get much
better than this.
