Duigan's The Year My Voice Broke showcased an entirely new voice in
Australian cinema, with an American indie mood of disaffection and
urban grittiness transferred to the beach landscapes and
strait-laced morality of a much younger country. With Flirting, the
director shifts focus from male to female adolescence. Kidman plays
the vicious head girl of a Catholic school who makes life hell for
part-Aboriginal Thandie Newton. Many fans make mention of the shower
scene, which presages Kidman's penchant for exhibitionism… But still
a biting, if dated, movie.
