Flirting
Originally released: 1991
Duigan's The Year My Voice Broke showcased an entirely new voice in Australian cinema, with an American indie mood of disaffection and urban grittiness transferred to the beach landscapes and strait-laced morality of a much younger country. With Flirting, the director shifts focus from male to female adolescence. Kidman plays the vicious head girl of a Catholic school who makes life hell for part-Aboriginal Thandie Newton. Many fans make mention of the shower scene, which presages Kidman's penchant for exhibitionism… But still a biting, if dated, movie.
