In this slice of 1950s nostalgia, hot properties Crudup and Phoenix
play the Holt brothers, sons of a primary school teacher (Baker) whose
husband died over a bet with rich neighbour Abbott. The boys are drawn to
his beautiful prep school daughters, the older and better-looking
Crudup becoming involved in back-seat drama with Connolly. Phoenix,
in love with Tyler but unable to tell her, bears the brunt of the fall-out
when Connolly, forced by her father, breaks it off. Slow moving
direction and a cliché-ridden script takes the edge of this
absorbing study in families and first love.
