This was never going to be as good as Raiders, but Spielberg being
Spielberg, it's still an adrenaline-pumping adventure that's better
than most. This time Dr Jones is on a quest to retrieve mystical stones
stolen from an impoverished village. His chief obstacle: a Thuggee
cult intent on using the stones to unleash evil forces upon the world.
Darker than Raiders, it feels a little more manipulative and shows the
first cracks in Spielberg's as yet effortless cinema. From here on in,
it never seems as easy and natural as his golden period from Jaws to E.T.
