This Is Spinal Tap
Originally released: 1984
That rare beast, a perfectly realised idea. Reiner's 'mockumentary' about bloated, out-dated heavy metal band Spinal Tap (the stellar trio of McKean, Guest and Simpsons voicer Shearer) is a comic gem, with on-the-money satire, belly laugh tomfoolery and more classic moments than you can shake a stick at. Take your pick: the amps that go up to 11, the inescapable stage pods, Derek Smalls' trouser eggplant, Billy Crystal's mime waiter, the spontaneously combusting drummers... The band play their own absurd songs (Living on a Sex Farm, etc.)
