Superb mockumentary about Allen's favourite era, the 1930s. The story
of a jazz guitarist, Emmett Ray (Penn finally coming into his own), it
provides Allen with a series of digressions on the nature of music,
genius and love. Ray's relationships with women illustrate his
relationship with his own music; Allen questions whether artists need
to love in life to make better art, or whether they open their hearts in
their art and so can't love. Morton gives an astonishing performance as
Ray's silently adoring girlfriend, showing up the more established
Thurman, who appears to get more brittle with every role.
