Grand guignol horror opera at its most visually electrifying, Se7en is
the apotheosis of the serial killer sub-genre. Weary detective Morgan
Freeman is compelled to catch one last killer, a madman seemingly
re-enacting the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt is the young buck rookie
trying to prove himself, but who tragically plays into the killer's
hand. Brilliant and inspired movie-making, the final moments go where
most films fear to tread. Andrew Kevin Walker's deliriously malign
script is masterfully realised by the superb Fincher, with
cinematographer Darius Khondji providing a suitably putrid, fetid,
voyeuristic point of view. One of the best films of the 1990s, easily.
