| The Coen Brothers |
 |
|
Ignore the credits: Joel and Ethan Coen co-produce and co-direct.
They've created breathtaking moments in several genres - only to be
crudely imitated in crummy Brit flicks. Shallow Grave pillages the
awesome Blood Simple, and that's just for starters. Go to the source:
the bathos of Fargo; the gangster rumpus in Miller's Crossing;
Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter's deadpan shenanigans in Raising
Arizona. The Hudsucker Proxy and Big Lebowski are more uneven, but well
worth it for the hula hoop scene and John Turturro in a purple cat suit
(respectively). Critics accuse the Coens of hollow style. Let them eat
economy digestives.
