The Dardenne brothers were the unlikely winners of the 1999 Cannes
Palme D'Or for Rosetta, a beautifully observed, powerful film about
life on the margins of millennial society. It was their fourth feature,
but the first to attract attention. They started out in the 1970s,
shooting videos of factory strikes in Belgium, giving a voice to people
who wouldn't ordinarily be heard. That's remained their hallmark,
both in documentaries and fiction. Like the characters they film,
they've been largely ignored; but the Palme D'Or suggests that the
climate for their kind of work - politically engaged, cinematically
unflinching - may yet return.
