In this film, Kusturica plays it purely for laughs. Marko, a racketeer,
falls foul of Dadan, a coked-up gangster. To settle his debts, he agrees
to the betrothal of his son to Dadan's diminutive sister. The arranged
liaison is unwelcome to prospective bride and groom alike and, as the
wedding approaches, their attempts to escape wreak havoc with Marko
and Dadan's plans. Although the relentless slapstick may prove
wearing to some viewers, the film resonates with such unforced joie de
vivre that it is hard to dislike its anarchic celebration of the Gypsy
way of life.
