An ambitious attempt to chronicle the decline and fall of Yugoslavia.
Underground follows the respective paths of Marko and Blacky from
their time as Communist partisans undermining the German occupation
of Belgrade, through the Tito regime to the country's descent into
civil war. Our heroes drink, dance, sing, and fight their way through
scenes of unflagging energy and visual invention. Kusturica handles
the potentially worthy subject matter with humour and panache, but
does not trivialise Yugoslavia's tragedy. Hugely enjoyable yet
ultimately poignant and with excellent performances from its three
leads, Underground is a kaleidoscopic delight.
