The Context aims to give you the info you need to get the most out of the movies.

Magazine & Archive
As a weekly web magazine, we review the most important new films as they come out, giving you unbiased, informed opinions on what's good and what's not. But with our online archive, we also give you a critical context to help you judge for yourself.

Articles & Links
As well as short, snappy, one-screen articles, we run in-depth pieces. Every week, you'll find info on all the directors and stars, including profiles, interviews and features. There are links to other films they've made, as well as their influences, interesting parallels, and further things to check out.

Searching, Browsing, Linking
You can get at all this info in lots of ways. You can click from the pictures on the home page directly to the week's new films, and surf the links from there. You can look up any film or person with our easy-to-use search engine. Or you can browse alphabetical and chronological lists of titles and names.

No Selling
Though we concentrate on things we like, there are scathing put-downs as well as passionate recommendations here. We're not trying to sell anyone anything. But if you do want to buy videos or DVDs, we provide a link on each page which takes you directly to the relevant page on BlackStar.co.uk, which we feel is a reliable online retailer.

What Do We Like?
We don't claim to cover everything - we're not interested in providing yet another platform for crap - but we are interested in all sorts of cinema. If we think it's worth watching, we aim to cover it eventually. You'll find plenty of gaps which we haven't filled yet. E-mail us about them, suggest articles and links. You never know, we might take you on as a writer.

Who Writes The Context?
Our writers are currently drawn from the top young critics and journalists. Between us, we've written for every British broadsheet paper, as well as publications like Sight And Sound, Time Out and Variety. Some of us are also film professionals – directors, producers, programmers - giving The Context a unique pool of expertise to draw from.

Who Designs The Context?
The Context has been designed and produced by a group of young web professionals. The site is based on a PHP architecture which dynamically displays articles and links to other films, directors, stars and articles to guide you through the myriad of info that lies within our site.

Our philosophy behind the design of The Context is to give you something different to what people normally expect from the web, something a little more unique. Obviously we hope you like what we've done and if you have any comments about the design feel free to get in touch.
